Such a beautiful print! I bought this for my best friend whose sheltie passed. Her previous sheltie was large and so this print looked strikingly similar to her beloved pups together. I had to contact the seller for an address change and she responded very promptly and was able to make the last minute adjustment. Thank you for your lovely work, it brought my friend to tears. ❤️

My Collie, Shelties and cats are my favourite models, but I enjoy painting other people's animals too.
My studio is bright and welcoming, and I usually have at least one dog and cat for company.
A painting starts out with taking photos or finding them in my own reference files. Then I decide on a medium and tools
Next step is a preliminary drawing, then I start layers of colour, and finally, I'll have the finished painting
I often get lost in my work, and only "come back to earth" when a dog ot cat reminds me it's time to eat.

It Started With Dogs

I don't remember a time when I didn't reach for something to draw with, and I don't remember a time when I didn't crave a dog, a cat, and a horse of my own. Growing up, I wanted to be an artist with lots of animals, and I wanted to go to Art School to learn about painting. I was a young adult before I achieved these things, but they were all worth the wait. I've been a full time Animal Artist (emphasis on dogs) since the early 1980's. I think I have the best job in the world, although the job comes with the occasional 1,000 + lb horse standing on my foot, or a spoiled dog sharply nipping my ankles, or a visiting cat vanishing under my couch and refusing to come out. My studio is in my home, so the animals are always with me, and I work in watercolour - such a glorious medium! as well as elegant graphite, and occasionally, Coloured Pencil.
A new painting/drawing begins with research into the particular breed, body language, and background I am putting into a painting - sometimes a quiet pose, sometimes full out action. I choose photos from the many hundreds I have taken over the years, (and some that people have given me) to do the initial drawing by hand, (the modern way of tracing or projecting the image just doesn't feel right for me - I 'm proud of my drawing skills) then the prelilminary drawing is transferred to my favourite Arches 300lb Hot Press Watercolour paper, and the actual painting or graphite work begins. An 11 x 14 painting can easily take a month or more to do, depending the complexity, and larger work can take much more time. Lack of patience has no place in my studio. I do the small 8 x 10 prints myself and use a local printer for the larger ones. Each one is lightly retouched with Derwent Watercolour Pencil to be sure the colours and crispness are up to my standards. Note Cards are printed by me and placed in clear plastic bags for shipment.
